What is Conformation?

Conformation is the official term for dog  / breed shows.  The dogs that are entered in an AKC show and are judged by how closely their breed conforms to the breed standard. The judge is familiar with the breeds he/she judges  & evaluates them according to how well the dog conforms to their breed as described in the individual breed standard.

There are different dog classes that can be entered according to the dogs age or exhibitor preference.Male dogs compete first than the bitches.   Ribbons are given out for the different entered classes & the winners from each class compete for Winners dog & Winners bitch.  The winning dog or bitch than compete for Best of breed, Best Of Winners, Best Of Opposite Sex & Select.

To be eligible to compete in an AKC Conformation show your dog must be:

  • six months or older on day of show
  • Recognized breed by AKC
  • Registered with AKC
  • NOT spayed or neutered
  • no disqualifying faults,as stated by the breed parent organization
  • In sound health and up- to- date on all  vaccinations

Interested people should read & know their breed standard and attend a dog show.  Sign up for conformation classes to learn the basics and have a well groomed dog, nails trimmed, hair tangled free & bathed.

It is a wonderful event to show case your dog & take pride in what you own or bred.  And being a member of the MKC can help you get started!
